Sergio Guzman Speaks to Students - December 2, 2020

Yesterday, Sergio Guzman talked with the A Groupers who recently read the book Refugee by Alan Gratz. Mr. Guzman shared his experiences as a refugee in the 1960s when his family fled Cuba after Castro took power and establish a one party Communist regime. He also talked about how these experiences increased his resolve to capitalize on the opportunities America offers its citizens that cannot be found in Cuba and many other counties around the world. Mr. Guzman came to America not knowing English, but never let that stymie him. In the 1990s, he joined the FBI and helped establish the Miami field office’s Cybersecurity Division. Mr. Guzman left the students with a powerful message: You can do anything you want in life. The only person who can stop you from achieving your dreams is yourself.

We greatly appreciate Mr. Guzman for taking the time to speak with our students and passing his invaluable life lessons.

Former Submarine Commander, Fred Dohse Speaks to Students - November 10, 2020

Retired Navy Captain Fred Dohse, grandfather of Chandler Pirate Luke, talked with C and A groupers today about his experience in the Navy on nuclear submarines, his time in the West Wing working for the Clinton Administration, and his tenure at the Savannah River Nuclear Site. The students were fascinated by Dohse’s stories about the Navy, his journey to becoming the captain of a Los Angeles-class submarine, and how he practically utilized chemistry to build an impressive career in the Navy. The Chandler School and its students were incredibly lucky to have this opportunity engage with this decorated patriot. Thank you, Mr. Dohse, for coming today!

Halloween Day - October 30, 2020

Today, we celebrated Halloween at the Chandler School. Most of the student body and all the faculty dressed up for the occasion. We had Iron Man, Black Panther, Batman, the Mandolorian, Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, Delores Umbridge, Albus Dumbledore, and many more join us today! The students participated in a costume parade, got down in a dance party, played multiple field games, and created Halloween themed crafts. It was a great day to be a Chandler Pirate (we had a pirate visit us today too)!

Sheriff Hobart Lewis Talks to Students - October 20, 2020

On October 20, Sheriff Hobart Lewis came to talk to our students about the responsibilities, jurisdiction, and duties of his office. One of our C group students, Tritt, introduced Sheriff Lewis. It's always beneficial for our students to learn about different jobs first-hand instead from a textbook. The students found it most interesting that Sheriff Lewis and his department police the entirety of Greenville County including the cities of Greenville, Greer, Simpsonville, Fountain Inn, Mauldin, and Travelers Rest. We greatly appreciate Sheriff Lewis taking the time to talk to our students!

9/11 Firefighter talks to students - September 15, 2020

On September 15, we were very privileged to have a social-distanced assembly with parent Billy Martin, who was a fireman for the FDNY at Ground Zero on 9/11. He is a fabulous presenter. The students and faculty were amazed by everything he had to do when it all happened. He wore his fireman formal dress uniform at his presentation and had artifacts and photos. He even had a piece of steel from the building. We are proud as a school to be able to honor 9/11 and to have a primary source of that day, not a secondary source, which the students are learning in history. It was very interesting hearing the process he went through from the beginning of the day and all the events that transpired afterwards that many people may not know about this historical event in America. It was a real privilege for all students and faculty to see the pictures. He is a real hero. However, Billy is the first to point out, it was his fallen fireman and policeman that were the true heroes to him. Once again, thank you Billy for supporting our school and honoring 9/11 and remembering the people we lost that day.

First All-School Assembly - September 2, 2020

On Wednesday, September 2nd, we held our first full day of classes since March. We also assembled for the first time as a school. Everyone was socially-distanced and wore face-masks. We’re doing everything in our power to keep our students learning in-person with their peers so they can receive the best possible instruction. We also want to keep our school open for our students’ mental health. Many of our kids struggled being apart from their friends. Some of the safety precautions we’re taking are following CDC guidelines, hiring a bonded cleaning service, and keeping our kids in pods throughout the day to thwart possible cross-contamination.
